Jenny Schweitzer Bell is a filmmaker based in New York City known for her character-driven stories that examine identity, culture, and the human experience. The Puzzle Palace, her first collaboration with her husband, Brian Bell, had its World Premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.
Her award-winning short films, The Magic of Chess and Girls in Chess, were selected for the 2020 American Film Showcase, a program of the U.S. State Department that showcases award-winning contemporary American documentaries globally. The Magic of Chess received a “Best of the Year” nomination at the 2020 Vimeo Film Awards and many of her works have premiered with top-tier publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, National Geographic, and The Atlantic.
Jenny has also completed multiple larger projects in recent years: a 45-minute commissioned film for the Boulder Crest Foundation, a 6-part video series to accompany the Todd Haynes film, Wonderstruck for Amazon Studios and Rhythm in Motion, a 10-part series in which she collaborated with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of NYC to highlight subway musicians.
Prior to her documentary directorial work, Schweitzer worked as a physical producer on independent films such as The Ballad of Jack and Rose, Keane, 12 and Holding, and Secretary.
She studied photography and film at the Rhode Island School of Design and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
